October made the walk home scarier. The combination of the soon setting sun and Halloween sure did not help. Both boys were in fifth grade. If you asked them, they ruled the school. The pair used to be friends, now they just fought every chance they got.
“You know about the shortcut through the woods?” Ronnie teased Jacob again. Both boys were part of an after school program. For weeks the pair had been avoiding each other.
“Everyone knows about it,” Jacob replied. He knew what was coming next.
“Too scared to go that way, huh?” Ronnie tried to one-up him all the time.
“Eff off”
“So that is a yes?”
“Let’s go that way and take pictures.” Jacob pulled out a newer Samsung phone. Once again he called out Ronnie’s bluff. He was faster than Ronnie in gym class. He waited for his excuse. The sooner the better. He was about ready to walk away, part of him wanted to see Ronnie dig himself into an even deeper hole.
“Yeah, let’s. Don’t tag me in any of the photos though. I don’t need people thinking we are friends again.” He pulled out his own phone that had a worse camera in it. Everyone in school laughed at the cracked screen. In his defense, it was an I-phone. It was a much older model, one of the slim green ones. His battery was low enough, he would have to make it count. He continued, “If there is a dog or a wolf we need to throw rocks at it.” His small hands reached toward the ground to pick up the biggest rocks.
“We have to both throw rocks at the same time!” Jacob countered Ronnie with a challenge. “Don’t run. I can outrun you. I am not worried about the wild dogs in the forest. Not as long as your slow a– is with me.”
“Yeah, but I can throw rocks harder and better than you can!” Ronnie smirked.
The shortcut was quickly becoming the “long-cut” based on the two’s verbal disputes. The pair lived on the same street and went to the same school, it was kinda hard to avoid each other.
“I am just gonna go now” Jacob put the rocks in his pocket and pulled out his cell phone.
“Yeah, let’s go.”
The duo’s bluff lead them toward the shortcut through the forest. The classmates would emerge from the forest very close to Ronnie’s house. Jacob had a bit longer walk, he promised himself he would drop his backpack if he had to run. Jacob was better at planning, Ronnie was all about living in the moment.
The two entered the dense foliage. Like in life there was no clear path. Ronnie pointed toward the sun. “As long as we remember where the sun is in the sky, we can’t get turned around.” Jacob nodded. It was the first thing the boys agreed on without first fighting in months. Well, that and their dispute.
All the sounds of nature are threatening when you are at its mercy. Birds screeched, the wind carried fear with it. Ronnie threw a rock.
“We need those for the wolves!” Jacob yelled. He was surprised by his comrade’s stupidity. “Let’s keep walking.” The two quickened their pace. Jacob was the first to pull out his phone and take pictures. Ronnie followed suit, his battery was at 4%. He would not let Jacob know this out of his own pride.
Everything was a competition and this was no different.
“You are dumb enough to stay here ’till the sunset aren’t you?”
“No a——–, we got time, we are close. We have to get out before the sun sets.”
“Well duh.” The two wasted more precious time swearing at each other.
Both heard the twig snap; a dull echoing. Neither of them could tell you about the rabbit that broke it. Both ran away so fast anyone would have laughed at them. They ran so fast Jacob forgot to drop his backpack as he planned. They ran toward the setting sun, by each other’s side. Each glanced over their shoulder to make sure the other was still there.
When the boys saw their street, both simply walked on to their houses. Neither had anything left to say. Both could hardly wait to show their pictures proving they braved the forest.
Some of us were always friends, we just won’t admit it.
Never give up on life. Never give up on love.
